Just bought 2gb Gingle RAM from MSY for $42 - bargain. No issues - plug and play. Awesome price, might head down there today. But can i mix and match different brands of ram? I actually challenge the wiki that says don't buy cheap ram. That is more of a caution, because, as you said, ram is ram, but generally people complain when there are problems with generic, 3rd party RAM. This could range from failure to start and many other problems that are usually the RAMs fault.

Thanks for posting. Goodluck with the new RAM - what machine did you buy it for? What I should of asked is dose any one know the specs of a apple ram upgrade compared to say a kingston value kit Does it use more voltage, buffered or unbufferd? Im trying to find out what quality apple ram is compared with value ram. The fact that it will work because it is DDR 530 667 So-DIMM 200 isnt what i want to know. I looked at apple site and they are selling the 4gb kit for around $800. But you can get kinston 4gig kit for around $100.
Is any one aware of any differences other than pricing and brand name? Hi, Is the RAM for MacBook Pro SO-DIMM or normal desktop RAM? I just read the wiki and it's listed as SO-DIMM, but I think I remember reading that it's the desktop RAM, or is this for the other types of MacBook? Also, does it need to be 667MHz (not 800MHz)? Let's say if it's the desktop RAM. Will something like this fits because it's got a heatsink as well:? EDIT: Actually went to the Apple website and it's also listed as SO-DIMM, I'm not sure why I thought it would be the desktop RAM.
Hi, i got given a mac mini as an xmas gift from a relative a couple of years ago: 1.42GHz power pc G4 processor with 512K cache, 512 mb of DDR SDRAM (says 'supports up to 1GB' on the box), 80GB HDD, ATI 9200 graphics card with 32mb DDR mem We presently have it hooked up to a 720p 37' lcd tv and use it for net surfing, photoshop CS2. From reading the wiki here it says: Arrangement: 1x1GB 1 Slot. What to buy: PC2700 DDR (333 MHz) DIMMs, supports 184-pin Brand: Anything will do, but users normally have the best experience with Kingston or Corsair. Also, don't go for the dirt cheap RAM.
Would i notice much difference upgrading the ram to 1GB? I am probably not comfortable with changing the ram over myself (i had a look online, it looks a bit too fiddly for me to be happy that i won't break something) -i am in perth, so only the various mac shops can do this? Digilife quoted $120+$30 installation. Not quite correct Matt. I have a 'Core 2 Duo' 2.16 GHz imac, and replaced the two sticks of standard 512MB Hynix RAM with 2 X 2GB sticks of Kingston KVR667D2S5/2G sticks of RAM.
A check of the 'About this Mac' shows up 4GB of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. Works perfectly. A useful website is Streetwise software's site: allows you to check your computer to see what it's capable of running and what RAM is compatible.
Don't buy your RAM from Streetwise as it's way expensive. I purchased my RAM on ebay – $39.99 for one stick with $9.99 postage. Take it in with you. Theres no such thing as 'unsupported'. No two ways about it.
And back in the day, many SDRAM 133MHz (as used in G4) wouldn't work with mac. There have been various reports about Kingston DDR3 not working properly in the new macbook and macbookpro. I got my 4GB upgraded through Apple, they use Samsung made DDR3 SODIMM I just got my 2x2gb DDR3 sodimm sticks delivered from ebay. Total for 4gb was $145 delivered. Could you post a link to that seller? $145 is a bargain. You will probably find it will work fine with 1 stick but with 2 sticks it will freeze.
It has also been reported, 1 stick will work perfectly with 1 of the original sticks. I wonder will Apple be able to solve this with a fw update. I guess as more people start to upgrade to 4gb more people will start to have the freeze issue so Apple will have to do something. You could always ask for a refund if the next batch does the same thing.
I would also advise them of the freeze issue as I bet these companies have no idea. If my next batch of Kingston does the same thing, I will order 4gb from Ebay. If that doesn't work, well then Apple will be hearing from me.
Still working fine, much longer than the other one's ever worked. I have VMWare Fusion up and a bunch of other stuff using over 3Gb fine. I ordered them from the eBay store that NetGX (now Str1K3R,Str1K3R) linked last Wednesday, the 3rd. I got shipping email from them on the 5th saying that they were shipped on the 4th. They arrived today, exactly 7 days after I ordered them (I'm in Melbourne).
I paid $90USD all up (free shipping). Happy with them so far!
They use Samsung chip's, but the PCB's aren't actually made by Samsung. In the System Profiler – Memory page the Manufacturer, Part Number and Serial all show up as 0x00.but who cares, as long as they work fine!:P. Mine did that once with the old ram in it too, would've hoped the new firmware had fixed those kind of sleep problems though.
If it hasn't frozen at all though sounds like you might've managed to get a good batch! How is your ram going? I am having serious sleep issues now. Sometimes it just won't wake and I have to hold down the power button and re start. Looks like I will have to go back to the stock 2gb. I am seriously starting to regret buying this machine:( I have tried another fresh install, put it to sleep for a couple of hours and it didn't wake.
The strange issue is though, when I held the power button down and then started it up again, it resumed from hibernation? I won't be buying another 1st gen again. I have installed the original 2gb this morning. Will see how it goes.
If ok, I will definately order the 4gb from Ebay. With the 4gb, I am having different freeze issues after the firmware updates. Instead of freezing while working on something or idle, it is freezing coming out of sleep. Before I did a clean install, it would happen every few days, after clean install, it would happen after leaving it sleep for a couple of hours. Why can't apple get it right:( If I was in Sydney or Melbourne I would take it into an Apple store but being on the Gold Coast I will have to wait until the new store opens at Robina, whenever that may be.
Hi All, I am looking at updating my MBP 2.2g from 2gb to 4gb but I am trying to work out which memory is going to be the best. From what I have found and told by scorptec it seems I should get at $149 Originally I was going to just get the standard memory as it was a fair bit cheaper from Centrecom at only $47 each 2gb. From my understanding the MBP is only able to run with 4gb of memory so I am thinking I might as well get the extra low latency memory and be done with it but just thought I would ask others options and see if anyone has already gone in this direction and has some experience with it. Thanks One thing I have just found is: Which seems to say it is worth it but they are comparing 2gb to 4gb so may not really cover it properly.
How did you guys go with the RAM sticks from the US eBay seller? I'm looking at getting a 4GB kit as well but just noticed on his eBay site that he stocks both 1066MHz and 1333MHz RAM.
I'm thinking of getting the 1333MHz since it's faster. I realize that it will not make a difference since the processor only supports 1066MHz, but it's nice to know I have faster RAM, may be more future-proof?
Anyway, here's the link to his eBay store: So my question, would it make a difference whether I got the 1066Mhz RAM or the 1333MHz? To me, the 1333MHz is just better value since it's the same price. What do you think? How did you guys go with the RAM sticks from the US eBay seller? Since I installed this ram 4 days ago I haven't had a single issue so I guess all is ok, finally:) I am going to give it a week or 2 though before I start jumping for joy, lol. I would get the 1066mhz ram as that is what is used in the macbook.
I wouldn't be getting the 1333mhz because it may not work and if it does it will slow down to 1066 anyway. You will probably find however, they have listed the ram incorrectly and it is only 1066mhz not 1333mhz. Up to you though:) I am happy I purchased this ram and should have sooner. I am disappointed with Kingston for causing me so much grief:(. Anyway, here's the link to his eBay store: Just wanna share my experience. I ordered 4GB DDR3 ram from this ebay seller to install on my Macbook 2.4Ghz.
My macbook can boot up with the startup sound but always stall/crash before Mac OS finishes loading. I have returned the ram back to the seller and ask for refund. Maybe it's just me being unlucky but I dont think i'll bother doing a swap. I think I might try OWC and pay slightly more to get ram guarranteed working (since they specialize in Mac after all.) Does anyone know any other US sellers? I think I'll skip local sellers with the relatively significant price difference. Hrm I am having some weird issue's which I might put down as RAM related.
I got the RAM from that eBay seller. It doesn't lock up like it did with my corsair RAM, but it does weird things. In the last week i've had one kernel panic, one lockup when moving the mouse to get out of the screen saver, applications become unresponsive when VMWare is running, VMWare machine's having multiple BSOD's (almost all the time now, within 10 minutes – even on 'brand new machine's'), and Vista in bootcamp continuously BSOD's too now, even just then after a brand new install it froze the first time, BSOD's the second boot.
I'm going to try 'reseat' the ram first, if it still behaves funny i'm going to try the original ram, see if that fixes anything. Ok, I just ran 'Rember' (osx memtester) and the RAM fails at pretty much every test: A whole bunch of: FAILURE! Data mismatch at local address 0x000000017ba2b1f8 Expected Data: 0xa6e3ad, Actual Data: 0xe6e3ad Then ended with:.
Address Test Failed. One or more DIMM address lines are non-functional. Execution time: 168 seconds.
Why would this happen all of a sudden (over maybe the past week). When I first got these sticks they passed the exact same memtest 100%, and I didn't have problems for weeks! Have you had much experience with the low latency ram that Corsair have out and by the looks OWC seem to also have? I had a quick look at your site but at a quick flick it's more go via what you computer is to see what memory you have. At this stage I haven't found that you have any of this type of memory. Can you please advise if you have low latency memory for a 2.2g MBP ICD Sorry I don't have experience with the Corsair memory.
We could sell it, but it takes a long time to compile a catalogue of parts that we can guarantee will work rock solid in certain systems, especially Apple computers. I guess if you can find a reseller with a good return policy if the modules don't work, then it's worth giving it a go, if you are expecting some signficant difference in performance. Just as a relevant note: I purchased 6GB of OWC ram before christmas (3 x 2GB pairs) It was cheap, the service was exceptional and it arrived to my door in sydney 2 days after ordering.HOWEVER.4 of the 6 chips were faulty – 1 especially so causing the machine not to boot.I spent more than a day testing the pairs to find out which were bad.4 of 6 were bad.for me those odds are not good enough.and in my mind it is the same sort of false economy as putting cheap tyres on your families car.just not worth it.
Same here, 2 x 2Gb DDR3 sticks working like a dream. Interestingly I received Corsair (or was it Crucial?????) RAM and not Micron like I ordered. There is an explation, and sorry for any confusion we might have caused.
Micron make the modules which are then branded as Crucial, which is the retail front for Micron. Sometimes we receive the modules with the Crucial stickers on them, but they are the exact same Micron item. You should see the little MT symbol on the chips on the module. MT = Micron Technology.
Thought I'd report my positive experience with RamCity. 80 min response time from initial email query. Then relatively fast email responses from there. Rod was also willing to price match. From point of order it took 40 hours for my RAM to arrive — that includes two night time periods having purchased mine AH (so if I had ordered before 1PM I would of received it the next day 21 hours later). RAM was what I ordered.
Packing minimal yet effective. CC wasn't charged until shipping and I was able to track progress of delivery via AAE website. As a comparison I was also thinking of going with MacFixIt. 1.5 weekend days and a full business day transpired before I got a response to my initial email query. Calling them I went straight to voicemail.
Mac website still hasn't been updated to reflect new RAM possibilities for a Mac Mini (2009). I would of preferred to have gone with MacFixIt since I live near their warehouse and wanted to pickup but couldn't get through to them. RamCity/Rod's quick response and price match meant I was able to get grab multiple sticks of RAM including freight cheaper than MacFixIt.
If I had vehicle access I would of gone to MSY, CWorld, etc., but RamCity really delivered in this case. Some advice from the gurus please?:-) I am about to get one of the last of the 2008 Mac Pros, with 4x1 GB Apple-supplied RAM. I want to fill the remaining 4 slots for the speed boost, and for more memory (obviously).
Based on the sites that seem popular here my options are: Ramcity: Hynix 4x1 GB, $283 Ramcity: Nanya 4x2 GB, $326 Macfixit: Micron 4x2 GB, $389 I know Hynix is what Apple uses, but it seems cheaper per GB to go for one of the 4x2 options, so. Is Nanya memory OK, or should I spend more on Micron stuff?

Hynix, Nanya, Micron, Samsung and a few others are all top level chip manufacturers and are usually going to be high quality with very low failure rates. We've seen Apple use modules made by all of these manufacturers over a period of time. We've sold hundreds of these kits in all three brands and so far have only had one Micron module with ECC errors which was swapped out under warranty. We're currently selling Nanya because that is what we can currently buy in bulk at decent prices. Availability and pricing goes up and down all the time so personally I wouldn't hesitate to buy any of these brands, so long as the supplier was reputable, the warranty and return policy makes sense, and the price was right. In a Mac Pro.
Should the bigger memory modules (I have 4x2Gb Sticks) go first (ie slots 1 & 2), and the smaller modules in slots 3 & 4 (I have 4x1Gb sticks)?? I don't think it would make a difference. The testing I saw basically found that filling all 8 slots with matched modules of ANY size was the key to the speed boost. So it makes logical sense that the machine won't be using RAM in order of slots. It probably creates parallel paths to all of the slots if there are modules in them.
My guess only – I am not an expert. Well the Kingston was also causing wake from sleep issues so I sent that back as well for another replacement. I received the new set of Kingston a couple of days ago and I noticed this time it came from China (the other 2 sets came from the USA) and the chips had Qizmoda (or something like that) branding which was different to the last 2 kits (I think it was Infineon). So far so good, no issues with this new batch of Kingston.
3rd time lucky. I have sent the Samsung back to the US asking for a refund. Hopefully I will get it. Picked up 4 gig Kingston 2x2 sims DDR3 1066 from MSY today $104.
Would have preferred Hynix to keep in line with Apple standards but so far the Kinston seems fine The Kingston you bought from MSY, do you know what the part number is and what brand is on the chip? Are you having any issues? I purchased 4GB of RAM for my 2.4Ghz Alu Macbook yesterday around 1:30pm. Received it today (paid for the more expensive courier option).
So far it's working great. Passed both the quick and extended Apple hardware memory test. Haven't tried any games yet in VMware Fusion but will look forward to doing that soon. Install was very quick and easy. Great service and communication from Rod from RamCity. Looking forward to the performance boost from now on.
Hopefully I won't experience any of the unstability problems. I'm sure Rod will take good care of it if there are any problems:) Thanks Rod! Hi all, Corsair is selling 4GB(2x2GB) VSA4GSDSKIT667C4 (low latency ram) for macbook (667MHz) with only 50.99$ after mail-in-rebate. Please advice me whether I should buy or not. My macbook has original 2GB DDR2 ram and 2.4 GHz Intel C2D. 50$ for 4GB kit is extremely cheap and worth to buy, isn't?
The fact I only afraid is to happen instability in long term with low latency ram. I don't much about that. Please help me choosing it. Mail-in-rebate is only 1st May to 18th May 2009. Thanks in advance. Ps., I'm going to buy from Thailand via newegg, Do you think I can get rebate?
If the choice was between Elpida and Kingston RAM, is there any benefit in getting one over the other? There is one subtle difference between the two brands, if you are talking about the ones that we sell – which is the specifics of the lifetime warranty. Kingston's lifetime warranty is backed by Kingston themselves, so theoretically if the reseller goes bust you can go back to Kingston if you need a warranty replacement. The Elpida memory we sell, (or any other non-Kingston brand) has a lifetime warranty provided by RamCity.
You be the judge of which is better. This is the most common question we get asked, and it's usually because the third party memory is cheaper than Kingston (especially with the Apple-specific products). Selling cheaper products can sometimes raise suspicion but the fact is we import the third party memory direct from the manufacturer, whereas we have to buy Kingston memory from the aussie distributors just like everyone else does.
By importing directly we save up to 20-30%, which we pass on to customers. Hey guys, just looking for some help on whether this will work with my iMac or not. I'm using an 'Alu, 24', 3.06ghz (the 'stock' setup of that model) – The second most recent ones, without that new Nvidia chipset or whatever. I'm not sure what model that is exactly. From Umart: Corsair 4GB(2x2G) KIT PC-6400 (800MHz) DDR2 SODIMM RAM Internet Price: $81.00 Retail Price: $91.00 Model No: VS4GSDSKIT800D2 (just incase anyone wants to check it on Umart.com.au since I can't link directly to it).
I was thinking that RAM would do me, but can anyone confirm this? Hey guys, I'm sorry, but I am a.complete. newbe to the world of ram etc. I have an older white macbook that I'd like to upgrade. From what I can figure out, it is about 3rd generation.
The macbook currently has 1 GB of memory – it is a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, memory is listed as '1 GB 667 DDR SDRAM'. From the wiki I see that what I'm after is DDR2-667 SO-DIMM RAM, otherwise known as PC2-5300. Is this correct? I thought I read somewhere that it is a max upgrade of 4GB, but other places seem to say that (for my non Santa Rosa macbook) it is a max of 3GB – is this right? So – would the best option be for me to upgrade by buying 1x2GB and 1x1GB (I thought that you had to upgrade in pairs, but this thread seems not to agree with this)?
MSY has listed on their website, under the heading 'A Grade SO-DIMM Notebook DDR/DDR2/DDR3 Memory' 2G DDR2 Strontium / SuperTalent /Kingston for $34 and a 1GB version for $20 – is this the right thing that I'm looking at? Kingston is the only brand I've heard of, is that what I should be looking for? I'm sorry, so many questions I know, it's just that it's an area I know nothing about! But will it hurt the performance if I mix a 1gb stick with a 2gb stick?
I thought you were supposed to pair the sticks. Arguably the best performance is achieved if you combine modules of the same speed and size, as this enables a feature known as dual channel mode. (Dual channel mode is disabled if you have only a single module, or mixed size modules installed.) However, the actual difference in performance between configurations with mixed size modules and those with same size modules is only somewhere around 5%, or negligible. It's perfectly ok to simply add another 2GB module to your existing 1GB module, as we have customers do this all the time. I thought I read somewhere that it is a max upgrade of 4GB, but other places seem to say that (for my non Santa Rosa macbook) it is a max of 3GB – is this right?
If you have the MacBook2,1 model (look at the apple menu, about this mac, then click system information to see the model identifier), the maximum upgrade is 3GB of DDR2-667 (1GB + 2GB). If you have the MacBook3,1 model you can all the way to 6GB of DDR2-667. As per my previous post, it's not necessary to install memory in pairs with MacBooks. Ok, ram is on backorder for the macbook. Now I'm trying to update my g5 power pc. The specs: PowerMac7,3 Dual 2.7 GHz PowerPC G5 Currently has 512 MB DDR SDRAM From what I have read, it needs PC3200 DDR SDRAM 184-pin DIMM. It can go to a max of 8GB.
I asked at one of the computer stores yesterday, and they told me that they don't sell it. In particular, they don't sell the SDRAM. But he also said that about the macbook ram, and after looking at the computer, was able to find the correct ram for me. So I'm wondering what exactly it is that I'm looking for?
I mean (I know NOTHING about ram) is the SDRAM important? Is the 184-pin? And how much (ish) should I be looking at spending?
Go for example Select Apple in the drop down box under memory search by brand Find your model G5 It will spit out what models of ram are suited to your machine that Kington make. Then goto and paste in that model ram, click search All the stores that sell that around AU will show up and the prices. (its not 100% accurate pricing but its good enough to get you names of stores you can ring up) If I picked the right model G5 you have you need: KTA-G5400/1G 1GB PC3200 Kit KTA-G5400/2G 2GB PC3200 Kit Depending on the size ram you want. Most memory makers have the same thing on their websites, so check them all, Geil, Kingston, Corsair etc. Has anyone heard of the new MBPro unibodies being fussy about RAM timings or quality? I did an upgrade for a friend's new 13' MBPro. Bought two cheap PC3-8500 10666Mhz 9-9-9 OCZ-3m13332G DDR3 2Gb SO-DIMMs from umart.
With either single DIMM in the upper slot, all tests pass and no crashing. With either single in the lower slot, or with both installed, I get immediate errors in Apple Hardware Test, and frequent kernel panics. I reinstalled, swapped the DIMMs to every possible configuration, & repeated many times to make sure.(.) I'm annoyed because I bet Umart won't accept them as faulty, as they only seem partially faulty or maybe slightly out of spec. Maybe MBPros don't like slow RAM timings? Has anyone had similar experience? (.) I guarantee that this wasn't bad installation on my part.
I have installed lots of RAM in the past, redid the installation numerous times, and when I finally went back to 2x1Gb the problem went away immediately. Hi just wondering if this is a good deal or not? I have a fairly new iMac: 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 2GB 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM (2 x 1gb of ram in 2 slots) I like to have photoshop / illustrator / indesign / safari / mail etc open at the same time.
I have been doing a bit of work from home and finding the iMac is struggling a little. I rang a guy who can get the above mentioned ram and install it at. $100 to give me 3gb total (keeping 1gb original & adding 2gb) or $160 to give me 4gb total (adding 2 x 2gb new ram) If this sounds really cheap/expensive whatever, please let me know. I've googled about and some say Brand is not important others say it is. I forgot to ask what brand he quoted me on.
I'll find out if I end up placing the order. And just say I did go for the 4gb. What to do with the 2 x 1gb sticks? What do you guys do with excess ram? Can you sell it on Ebay? Or somewhere?
Note, I have delusions of Grandeur when it comes to ram. When I was young I never had much ram. I could never afford any extra ram.
Now I'm an adult I WILL have as much ram as I like: ). Am looking to max out my imac to 4g Same here. Looked around quite a bit but can't be bothered stuffing around with MSY or taking a chance with RAM that might not work well – some people say that Macs can be fussy about RAM, who knows? Crucial seems to have a very good reputation, so I downloaded a system scanner tool from here: This makes it all pretty easy, and they guarantee that the RAM they supply is optimal for your computer. I bought 4 GB from them at A$105 delivered – Crucial stuff comes from the States via UPS. They provide you with a slick-looking tracking service which says the goods were shipped straight away after ordering and paying by PayPal. Waiting for RAM to arrive now.
I guess Crucial isn't the cheapest but they seem to be regarded as producing quality product, and I don't think that doubling my RAM for $105 on a 24' iMac costing well over 2 grand is a big outlay. Anybody had experience with Crucial? I received the 4GB GSkill 1066MHz DDR3 that I ordered from Digitalyes.com.au ( $315.57 total including shipping and CC surcharge. Installed it in my 13' MBP this morning and ran the hardware diagnostic test for the past 3 hours. Working all fine so far. Too bad 4GB stick are still so expensive, running 6GB now. Hopefully this will make my machine a tad faster.
Snow Leopard is so memory hungry; yesterday it was running with over 7.5GB of swap in use!!! Just because I had SL running for 3 days. There's definitely so memory leak in that OS.
Restart it and it's all fine for a little while. Question peeps. Do the 2 x 1gb ddr3 chips you replace have any resale value? Or are they basically worthless?
This is the one thing that annoys me about ALL laptop manufacturers. They always ship with the the ram in 2 slots, even for 1 gig systems. Who wants 2 x 512 meg chips? Likewise I just upgraded my Macbook to 4 gig, and I know nobody will want the 2 x 1 Gig DDR3 chips out of it. The latest stuff, and basically goes to waste! Instead if they shipped with one 2 gig chip, that means all I would have to do is purchase just 1 other chip, instead of buying 2 and having 2 to go to waste.
Anyway, to answer your question, pretty much zero value. Does anybody who understands RAM know if Kingston ValueRam KVR1066D3S7/2G will work in a new 27' iMac? EDIT: In a that I set up 24 hours after first posting this question I got the following immediate reply: I have the exact same ram installed on my 27' i7 imac (2x2GB) adding to my existing 2x2GB apple ram totalling 8GB. Works perfectly, no issues whatsoever. Kingston's suggested RAM for the iMac is KTA-MB1066K2/4G. Not surprisingly my local MSY doesn't stock this Apple-specific RAM.
However they do have 2G sticks of (link to specs sheet), which is considerably cheaper than any price I can find for the KTA-MB1066K2 sticks. A person on (but only after his first iMac died when he tried to install it ten minutes after first turning it on.) Any possibility this is the same RAM, just with different part numbers? Hi All, I am sure this would have been covered before but I thought I would double check.
I bought some 2gb ram sticks as I wanted one to put in my netbook and the second stick I was going to onsell.there was a deal on 2 sticks for the price of one. Anyway long story short I put the two x 2gb sticks in my macbook (MA700X/A) to see if it would recognise it as I had read that it would only read 3gb (if 1gb + 2gb used) or up to 3.3gb (if 2 x 2gb used).but when I put the 2 x 2gb sticks in the system profiler showed 4gb. Now is the computer just showing the ram is there but will only actually use 3.3gb of the 4gb available.or am I lucky and actually have a newer model than I thought I did that can take 4gb?? I hope this makes sense. Ok, so I'd like to upgrade the ram in my 27' i7 iMac. I'm leaning towards getting an additional 2x2gb Ram so I have a total of 8gb Ram.
From my understanding, I need the following specs: ddr3 so-dimm pc-8500 1066mhz 204 pin However, when I browsed at staticice, I noticed some additional specs popping up: CL7, CL9, non-ECC.what do these additional specs mean and are the compatible with the imac?: And should I go with Kingston, Corsair, or some other brand? Anyone successfully upgraded their 27' i7 iMac's Ram and where did you buy it from?
Im looking to buy a new Macbook Pro with 8gb of RAM (as i will be using programs like adobe photoshop, illustrator etc.) just wondering if its better (or cheaper) to first buy online with 4gb and then buy seperately 8gb ram sticks or just upgrade from apple (extra $500+) for the 8gb option when i buy the macbook. Hi Whoba You will definitely save money if you buy the ram from an independent supplier (and not through Apple). Ram is easy to install (maybe 5 minutes) and as a bonus, you will also have the left over 2x2Gb chips that you can sell on ebay (and you should easily get over $100 for them). So you will save money + make some money! Ram is much cheaper in the US than in Australia, but if you want a guarantee that it is compatible with your mac as well as an easy process for return in the event of any issues, then it would be better to buy locally. If you are a business registered for GST, you will also be able to claim the GST back (saving you 11% of the cost). Our Mac memory supplier is Australia based and is also an Apple approved supplier.
So there are absolutely no issues with quality or reliability. You can click here to see the 8gb Ram Kit for MacBook pro. Hi, I'm purchasing one of the new model iMac i7s next week sometime. Can't wait on a powerpc atm. Instead of paying apple the 290 for 4gb ram upgrade I'm going to purchase it separately.
This looks to be what I'm after (1333mhz DDR3 SDRAM), but I just want to check it will work well with the new iMac. Can anyone check out the link and let me know if all the specs are ok?
Also am I right that the new iMacs have 4 ram slots down the bottom, so with the standard 4gb ram there will be 2 x 2 gb leaving me 2 spare slots for the upgrade? Thanks, help appreciated.
I have just been on to the OWC website and used the live chat – very nice service they have there plugged in my question and they had it answered in about 30 seconds:) Its fine to add the single stick in the imacs there would be a small performance benefit in running matched pairs but I plan to add another one later on to have a total of 12gb This has been my first time using OWC and they have been fantastic they shipped the memory nice and quick and it was less than a quarter of the cost of genuine apple. Very happy camper:). Hi This configuration sounds pretty similar to mine. I had been using 4Gb for past year and was getting the spinning beach ball more frequently lately (particularly when I had say 30 browser windows open). I took out one of the 2Gbs and put in a 4Gb – and has been running so much better with 6GB!
You can tell how close to the wire you are running, but opening up 'Activity Monitor' (in Utilities) and then go to 'System memory'. I can see that I currently have 1.3GB free – so if I only had 4GB installed, then I would be getting the beachball of death right now! If you need a hand finding the right ram for your macbook pro, PM me. Is the SO-DIMM ddr2 msy sells 200pin and will it fit in macbook? All DDR2 modules are 200 pin, but what you need to check is the speed rating. Particularly the 'older' macs are very fussy and refuse to recognise anything outside their parameters – if you can get MSY to give you a set of DD2-667 (a.k.a.
PCS-5300), that will work right off the bat. The majority of the MSY stock though is DD2-800 (a.k.a.
PCS-6400), and the MacBook motherboard cannot recognise or run it at the lower speed. If you do get that, you'll need to muck around with SPDTool, and I wouldn't recommend that unless you know a bit about the tech underneath the hood.
My iMac came with 4GB of RAM – can I buy a another 2x4GB modules and add it to the empty slots so I have a total of 12 GB?? Yep, I've just (like a minute ago) finished doing that dead same thing and wanted to share how easy and (relatively) cheap it was. I installed Crucial's memory scanner, it told me what was the correct memory to order, I placed the order for 2 x 4GB to the US on Friday night my Aus time for AUD305 including delivery, it turned up by courier this afternoon, I dug out a Phillips screwdriver and now my late 2009 iMac is sporting 12GB:-) FD. Hello Folks, I have a late 2006 Macbook Pro which has been faithful to me all these years. As of lately, I have been facing lots of crashes or really slow performance particularly with several safari windows open. Model Family: MacBook Pro Display: 15' Processor Type: 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo Memory: 2GB Model Number: A1211 Since I am not cashed up to invest in a new macbook pro, I am assuming buying extra DDR2 ram would solve my problem for the time being. Could you please advise me that buying the Kingston DDR2 2GB.2 for $56.2 at MSY would ensure my macbook would last another year?

Thanks in advance. Got a bit of a conundrum. I'm thinking to upgrade to 6GB ram for my MBP (late 2008) as that is the max it will support i've been informed from This OWC website seems to have cheap prices and from reading user reviews seems to be quite reliable. Firstly, would OWC 6GB PC3-8500 DDR3 1066MHz SO-DIMM Upgrade Kit be the right option for me? Also wondering if it is possible to install 8GB on this MBP and have it only read 6 of the 8 installed? As it seems as though there are some good specials on the 8GB option at the moment. Cheers in advance.
Apparently there are significant 'issues' when 8GB is installed (just google for it). How much RAM have you got now? I think it'll be cheaper to get a 4GB NuRam Module + a 2GB PC8500 DDR3 Module than to get the 6GB kit. I just checked on their website and must have misread it the first time, but it does say there that the Nuram is compatible with the late 2008 model so that is great as the Nuram seems to be a bit cheaper. I think I will grab that 4GB and then find a cheaper 2GB to go with. Is it possible to just replace 1 of the 1GB RAM slots and keep the other 1GB in there. Thus having 5GB of RAM?
Or does this not work well? For some reason an even 6GB of ram sounds better. Also happychappy I was wondering what shipping method you chose to get your RAM? Would you recommend for example the 4GB NuRAM and then the 2.0GB OWC PC8500 DDR3 SO DIMM 204pin 1066MHZ? Would these work well together for example? Just bought a 2x2GB kit for a 2010 iMac from the US given the high AUD.
Couple of notes, I chatted to OWC about their shipping methods, and the guy steered me clear of the cheap USPS shipping (USPS, not UPS – different things!). Whilst it is insured, apparently the process of claiming is horrid so if the package is lost it can take ages to chase up – so he recommended I upgrade to the cheapest of the courier methods.
I ended up ordering from Crucial.com (shipping was $25 at Crucial instead of $30 at OWC, and the RAM was $10 cheaper too when I ordered), however OWC now has NuRAM at $80 vs $86 at Crucial, and OWC branded RAM now down to $89 from $96, so the prices are still dropping. I ordered Sunday night, RAM shipped from Crucial Monday US time (Tuesday morning AU time) and was at my doorstep yesterday afteroon via UPS. That said, they probably make more money by sending it via a Courier. Definitely agree with you there, they'd surely take abit out of there. Have a 27 inch imac, (early 2010) looking at upgrading the default ram that is in it (4GB) From what I can gather in the specs, each slot can hold a 4GB module Question is, any good memory suppliers that will have the ram that I'd be after that you guys recommend? Tried MemorySuppliers which I've used before and they don't stock them try OWC rock bottom prices!
Just bought from them, no problems.thus far (still waiting delivery) 5 days and counting. Can I just add this to my existing 4GB RAM making a total of 12GB?? I'm pretty sure you can. Check the Crucial tool. It will give you your options. I also have a couple of questions: 1. Has anyone used any DDR3 Kingston value Ram in their MB or MBP?
What's your experience? Are there any real differences between KVR and KTA modules? Also, has anyone installed a 4Gb module in their aluminium unibody MacBook (Late 2008). I'm thinking about this one: 'KVR1066D3S7/4G VALUE RAM SO-DIMM 4GB PC3-8500. Can anyone else confirm the quality of Corsair product? I've been offered Corsair as a dealer upgrade option from 4 to 8GB on a new unibody MBP instead of ordering with the standard Mac upgrade that costs $560. However, the dealer price offered at $398 fitted seems a bit exxy compared to others I'm seeing on here.
I did it and it works well so far (1 week). I have a mid-2010 (Unibody) 17' MBP. I bought 2 x 4GB DDR3 (1333) Corsair from Centrecom in Hawthorn, Melb. I paid less than $200 instead of Apple's $560 price tag. Btw, I did it myself. Hope this helps. I have a 2008 imac which was shipped with 1gb of 800mhz ddr2 ram.
(iMac 20' Aluminum Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz: Standard RAM = 1GB. Max = 4GB (Released: )) I have yet to take the cover off but assume this is 2 x 512mb sticks.

I want to upgrade the ram – would this RAM from UMART be correct (the wiki guide says to buy 'DR2-800Mhz (PC-6400) non-ECC SODIMM 200-pin RAM' Corsair VS2GSDS800D2 2GB Value Select PC-6400 (800MHz) 200-pin SO-DIMM $40. Can I just buy one stick and just have 1x 2gb or do you need to have both slots filled with matching ram (e.g. I need 2 x corsair 2gb = 4gb)? How do I tell for sure that the corsair ram is non-ecc? Kingston is good RAM, but $138 is not a good price for 8GB of good RAM. I am looking for 8GB for a Mini at the moment, and shipping of 8GB from Eastern States to Perth is from $11 to $15 OWC RAM (which is also good RAM) is $110, and shipping from USA to Perth is $8, in fact, shipping of the RAM plus an SSD from USA (OWC) is only $10.80.and Australian retailers wonder why we shop overseas.we get ripped off here. 8GB in Australia = 138 + 11 (min) = $149.

8GB from USA = 110 + 8 = $118 = saving $31 8GB of RAM will fit into a std Australia Post padded envelope, and in total would cost under $3 to send to Perth. Guess where my $$$s are going?
